Bhutanese without refugee status begin hunger strike

Demanding refugee status and donor's support for their livelihood, around 50 Bhutanese refugees have started relay hunger strike in Beldangi-I camp from Monday.
The joint struggle committee that has been demanding official registration from Government of Nepal (GoN) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) decided to begin relay hunger strike till they get assurances for ration and refugee status.
Camp secretary TB Gurung informed that several non-registered refugees marched from other Beldangi camps and started their sit-in nearby the office of Refugee Coordination Unit, an entity of the ministry of home affairs that looks after refugee issues, since early morning.
Nandu Paudel of the committee informed that they decided to display empty plates in today's protest to symbolise their 'hunger'.
According to Paudel, around 3,200 hundred refugees are fighting for their refugee status and other facilities from UNHCR since 2007.
