The Bhutanese Canadian Association, Charlottetown hosted a dinner and a cultural Program at The United Church of Cornwall on 24th of January 2010 to mark its first Happy New Year in new country.
Rev.Niger Weaver, Rev.Jean Ward, Sister Gemma ,MP for Charlottetown Hon. Shawn Murphy, Citizenship and Immigration Officer Ashafa Ramahan, Mayor of Cornwall, Patrick MacFayden were the special guest who attended the function and jointly innagurated the ceremony.
The cultural activities was jointly organised by the Bhutanese immigrants living here on PEI.This was the first cultural show of its kind organised in Charlottetown by the bhutanese community living here.An estimated 300 invited guest attented the function along with the members of the Bhutanese Canadian Association.
Extending the new year greetings and Namaste to the guest Mr.Madan Kumar Giri welcome all the guest and shared the stories of being refugees for such a long period of time in Nepal.He also Acted as a Master of Ceremony for the programme.There were 15 cultural items including a Hindi Rap Dance By Saajan Gurung followed by English Dance By Rabina Darjee and a group choir performed by Bhutanese youth.Different Nepalese costumes and food were shared and served during the show.
On behalf of the sponsors Mr.Jean Murphy gave a vote of thanks to all the guest and committed full support and help whatever is needed for the Association.So far 10 Bhutanese families have been re-settled in PEI since the third countries re-settlement begun in the camp,in Nepal.
